About this object

On the cover in an oval, is a painted portrait of a young woman looking forward and leaning on a balustrade. Serving as the source for this portrait was James Watson's mezzotint of Nancy Dawson, the famous dancer at Covent Garden and Sadler's Wells who retired in 1767. The figure is against a gray ground, framed in raised gilt scrolls. The ends of the cover are in white with raised gilt scrolls. The sides of the box are in white, with raised gilt scrolls and a cluster of flowers in full colors on the front, back, and on the two ends. The interior and bottom are white.
