About this object

On cover of the rectangular box is a depiction of Ivan Petrovich Martos’s Monument to Minin and Pozharskii that now stands in front of St. Basil’s in Moscow’s Red Square. The socle with a bas-relief of citizens battling the Poles is roughly rendered. At the base is an inscription matching that on the monument (“To Citizen Minin and Prince Pozharskii”). Surrounding the image on three sides is an elaborate rococo frame in which the scrolls and leaves are studded with or anchored by weapons and military trophies. On the underside is a battle scene with a view of the Kremlin in the background. The scenes are rendered in niello against a stippled gilt background and the interior is gilded.
