About this object

The box is rectangular with cutaway corners. On the cover in niello is a view of the Moscow Kremlin from the Moscow (Moskva) River. The Large Stone Bridge and a group of small stone buildings outside the Kremlin are visible in the foreground. A small boat with rowers and a passenger is placed in the middle of the foreground. The Kremlin’s “cityscape” is dominated by the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great; the Great Kremlin Palace and Kremlin Towers are all visible. At far right, the domes of St. Basil’s are clearly rendered. The background is engraved to suggest rays of the sun. The sides of the box are decorated with a checkered pattern and the underside with niello and silver squares.
