About this object

The gilt cup sits in a silver openwork basket of acanthus leaves, rosettes in rectangles, etc. There are four enameled medallions, which, while contemporary, are like the other medallions on the chalice that were not made for it originally. The enamels, in blue, white and grisaille, represent half-length figures, 1. Christ blessing [transcription], 2. St. John the Baptist [transcription], 3. Christ carrying the cross (inscribed: [transcription]) and 4. the Mother of God (inscribed: [transcription]). The central portion is baluster-shaped and engraved with several rows of acanthus leaves. The bell-shaped base has a row of engraved acanthus leaves on the lower portion, and above, four medallions with engraved leaf frames. Here also are four enameled medallions with engraved leaf frames. Here also are four enameled medallions which are contemporary, but which were not made for the chalice originally. They represent: 1. Gethsemene, 2. the mocking of Christ, 3. the road to Calvary and 4. the Entombment. On each of them, Christ is identified by [transcription].
