About this object

Large beaker tapering upward is resting on spreading foot. Encircling the top and bottom of the beaker are wide bands of elaborate borders that consist of interwoven foliate and interlace patterns. Both borders are connected by the series of almond-shaped medallions designed to imitate large cabochon stones typical for the Russian metalwork of the 17th century. A narrow border of beads alternated with diamond-shaped ornamentation around the top of the beaker simulates gems encrusted ornamentation as well. The cover with ornate pierced border culminates in an elaborate finial that looks like a miniature dome topped with Islamic half-moon decoration. Three ogee-shaped ornaments are projecting outwards from the finial. All decoration is done in repousse. Oxidation process used to increase the contrast between the relief decoration and background.
