About this object

Chalice is in the Neo-Russian style, based probably on Byzantine prototypes. Bowl of chalice is glass (the Byzantine ones used hardstones) set in a silver mount. Hinged supports connect the silver base to the enameled silver band at top. Top band is dark green matt enamel with white doves in cloisonne enamel. Below this is a dark blue band of matt enamel with a Greek inscription, probably in champlevé enamel. At front is an ivory carving of the young Christ's head set in a frame with scroll engraving. Hanging from this upper band are 12 chains of varying lengths with semi-precious stones with a semi-precious stone and fresh water pearl attached at the bottom of each. The stones are mostly quartz. There are four cabochon amethysts at the knop and four green stones set on the otherwise plain base. The chalice was originally completely gilded.
