About this object

The graceful shape is early and the kovsh is more simply decorated than in the 18th century. The handle is engraved with a formal plant growing from an urn. On the opposite end is a knob with a Cupid's face on either side. In the center is engraved lightly the Imperial double headed eagle with the three crowns, the scepter and the globe. Around the outer edge is engraved an inscription which has been translated as follows: "By grace of God, we, the Great Lord, Tsar and Grand Duke Feodor Alekseivich, Potentate of all great and little and White Russia granted this kovsh to the Ataman of the Cossacks of the Don, Pozdei Stepanov, for his many services." All the decorations, the inscriptions and the inner edge of the kovsh are gilded.
