About this object

Kovsh was hammered out of a single sheet of silver. At the tip of the bowl is a pinecone. At the other end the handle is decorated with a scrolling leaf-and-vine design in low relief on a stippled ground. Inside, a round plaque attached to the bottom is covered with a similar motif executed in niello. This floral ornament reveals the influence of Persian art at the beginning of the 17th century. The inside and outside edges of the bowl are engraved, stippled, and gilded.
