About this object

Paul Storr stands out as one the most notable silversmiths of the English Regency and George IV periods. His remarkable reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neoclassical style that developed during the Regency as well as his monumental pieces in a florid Rococo style, of which this salver is an eloquent example. Twelve signs of the zodiac, each chased on a stippled ground and enclosed within foliate scrolls, enliven this large and heavy round salver. Decorating the center is a monogram, engraved later, with mirrored letters L C and the years 1837 and 1887. The scalloped edges, which were cast and chased separately, have knuckled volutes that alternate with four female masks surrounded by garlands and foliate scrolls.

The large round salver has scalloped edges. It is chased and embossed with the twelve signs of the Zodiac on a stippled ground, each encircled with foliate scrolls. In the center is a later engraved monogram with mirrored letters L C and the years 1837 and 1887. The scalloped edges have knuckled volutes alternating with four female masks surrounded by garlands and foliate scrolls, and four shell cartouches each containing a game animal or bird. Four rococo leaf-and-scroll supports spring from the heads.
