About this object

The chalice is worked en repoussé in a very elaborate design in a combination of the second rococo and Renaissance styles with some Russian motifs. Around the lip of the chalice is engraved an inscription from the liturgy. On the bowl are four oval medallions each surrounded by strass. Each contains a head and shoulders, gilded, on a rayed silver ground, as follows: Christ with the crown of thorns, Christ blessing, the Virgin and St. John the Forerunner. Between these medallions are elaborate scrolls with leaves etc. in high relief. Below the knop are four heads of cherubim in very high relief. Below these are four trapezoid panels, each containing a scene in silver gilt in high relief on a silver ground bordered in strass. The scenes are from the Passion of Christ: 1. the Taking of Christ, 2. Christ before Pilate, 3. the Mocking of Christ, and 4. Christ on the Way to Cavalry. Below these is a border in high relief composed of many baroque motifs combined with Russian braided birch.
