About this object

Around the upper part of the cup section are three medallions in repousse with classical scenes: 1. Venus riding on a shell drawn by dolphins; 2. a seated figure and another one tying Cupid to a tree with a garland of roses; 3. Minerva in a chariot drawn by a young man. Around the lower half of the cup section is a frieze of classical figures dancing and playing musical instruments, all in repousse. There is a decorative band at the bottom and one with a vine scroll at the lip. The detachable cover has a leaf and vine scroll engraved. The handle to the detachable cover and the thumb piece on the handle is in each instance the helmeted head of a man. The interior is gilt.
