OVAL BOX

Creator(s): Gabriel Marguerit (Silversmith)

About this object

Miniature represents Cleopatra half length clasping the asp to her bare bosom. It is round in an oval medallion topped by flanking garlands of leaves. Above, on the rim are a quiver full of arrows and two doves. The rest of the rim and that of the bottom have a band of intertwined ribbons and swags of leaves. The area between the medallion and the rim is filled with dotted ribs like a sunburst, on a stippled ground. These appear also on the bottom around the oval medallion containing a cluster of flowers and arrows with an eagle perched on a quiver. All these many chased motifs give a very busy overall effect.
