About this object
Around the tankard body are three pseudo-medallions made in repoussé in imitation of real medallions: 1. Nicholas I, inscribed in Russian "By God's grace, Nicholas I, Emperor and Autocrat of all Russia;" 2. the Tsarevitch Alexander Nicholaivitch, inscribed in Russian "His Imperial Highness, Alexander Nikolevitch;" 3. the Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, inscribed in Russian "Aleksandra Feodorovna, Empress of all Russia." Between them are winged figures holding cornucopias and supporting swags of flowers, etc. that hang below the medallions. Around the top is inscribed the following inscription about a horse, in Russian: "From N. Ya [ill.], the prize to the first thoroughbred trotter city horse, which ran on the 6th of December, 1864, in Barnavel." The foot has an elaborate repoussé design which is repeated on the cover. The handle for the tankard and for the lid are both cast in relief with leaf designs combined with fantastic animals on the former.
