About this object

The box is covered with a translucent red enamel on a guilloche background of zigzags. The gold frame about the lid is engraved with a ribbon design. Down the sides of the box are four bands engraved with leaves and flowers, with each leaf and flower being set with a rose-cut diamond. On the lid in the center is a miniature of the Emperor Nicholas II in regimental uniform and wearing many decorations. The miniature is set in a frame of twenty-six rose-cut diamonds. Above the miniature is an imperial crown, also in rose-cut diamonds. On the lid, on either side of the miniature are four sprays of leaves and roses. The leaves and stems are made in tiny diamonds, while the flowers are made in rose-cut diamonds. The sprays are affixed to the red enamel ground.
