About this object

The octagonal box is made from red gold, engraved and set with jewels. In center of lid is the imperial double headed eagle with a crown set with rose cut diamonds and two rubies. Around the eagle is engraved a garland of leaves and daisies. Along the perimeter of the lid is another similar garland enhanced with swags and stylized tassels. Edge of the lid is decorated with the border of alternating leaves and flowers. Panels on the sides of the box are engraved with different motives: laurel wreath with ribbon flanked by two six-point stars; two swans in heraldic position facing lotus flower; fasces with a sphinx on either side. On the bottom a central wreath of leaves and flowers surrounded with swags of leaves. Swags are supported by eight rays projecting from the center to each corner of the box.
