About this object

This rectangular, hinged box is made primarily of yellow gold, with accents of red gold. The lid features an oval medallion in dark blue translucent enamel with the cipher of Paul I, who ruled Russia from 1796 to 1801. The cipher, in Western letters, is surmounted by an imperial crown made of tiny diamonds. To the right and left of the oval medallion are two rose-cut diamonds; near each end of the box is a row of seven rose-cut diamonds. The bottom has a design of cubes surrounded by a border of leaves.

A rectangular box which is hinged. The surface is almost entirely covered with engraved and chased designs. On the cover in the center is an oval medallion in dark blue translucent enamel. Affixed to this is the cipher of Paul I in Western letters, surmounted by the imperial crown all in tiny diamonds. To the right and left of the oval medallion are two rose cut diamonds, while near each end of the box is a row of seven rose cut diamonds. The lid has a narrow border of blue enamel on red gold, while the rest of the box is a yellow gold. The bottom has a design of cubes surrounded by a border of leaves.
