About this object

A round box with a hinged cover. On the cover is an oval medallion containing a painted scene representing "Agamemnon's Claim to Briseis." A garland of green leaves and red berries in enamel on stippled gold ground frames the medallion and is repeated on the bottom edge of the sides. The outer edge and side of the cover are banded by wavy sprays of leaves and berries interlaced with a string of white beads. A band on the lid, four panels on the sides and the bottom are covered with reddish-orange enamel over engine turning ground imitating moiré silk with overall black spots like those of a leopard. Also on the lid are four roundels with chased gold leaves and a dot of red enamel each.
