About this object

A rectangular carnet de bal. The front, the back, and the spine have plaques of mother-of-pearl piqué with small criss-cross designs in gold. All the edges of the carnet are reeded gold. On the front and back in the center is an oval cartouche containing a repoussé cluster of flowers, and framed by a narrow band set with strass diamonds and indented four times for shell motifs in repoussé gold. The four corners on front and back contain leafy scrolls in repoussé gold. The covers are held together by a gold pencil set with an intaglio of Caesar's head in carnelian. The interior is lined with white moiré.
