About this object

An etui, or bodkin holder, is a decorative container used to hold bodkins (hairpins), toothpicks, or other small tools.

The two pieces of the bloodstone egg are hollowed out. Both are held in an openwork cage chased in gold consisting of rococo scrolls with swags of roses and four large rosettes on both the upper and lower sections and one on the top. Each are set with a turquoise en cabochon. The hinge is decorated with turning and with a thumbpiece.
