About this object

An etui, or bodkin holder, is a decorative container used to hold bodkins (hairpins), toothpicks, or other small tools.

The egg is made from two pieces of bloodstone which are hollowed out. Each is held in a cage chased in gold with rococo scrolls and crossed with swags of flowers. At the top is an engraved ring for hanging on a ribbon. About the hinge is an inscription in gold letters on an opaque white enamel ground.
