About this object

The box is round and has a cover which is detachable. An oval medallion is in the center of the cover and contains a scene in painted enamel. There is a man at the right and three females at the left pointing at a round altar between them. They are dressed in togas. This is possibly a Roman temple with Vestal virgins. The medallion is framed by two rows of half pearls, next to them is a band of dark blue guilloche enamel within which is a vine scroll intertwined with a string of beads. Next is a plain band of white enamel and at the edge are large half pearls linked by a molded gold vine with enameled green leaves and red berries. The sides and bottom have a similar decorative scheme but no scene.
