Title: Assistant/Associate Curator of Apparel, Jewelry and Accessories
Status: Full Time; Overtime Exempt
Work Schedule: Generally comprises ten eight hour days in a two week period. In addition, some evening hours, weekend work and special event coverage may be required in order to meet job requirements.
Travel: 0 – 25%

Job Summary: The Assistant/Associate Curator will be the lead of exhibitions and publications related to Hillwood’s permanent collection of apparel, jewelry, and accessories. Moreover, the curator will have the opportunity to oversee traveling exhibitions that fit the museum’s mission, and in particular, projects that address contemporary design broadly, making Hillwood and its collection relevant. Professional level designation commensurate with education and experience.

Essential Duties:
Curatorial role. Possesses keen understanding of the organization, acts as a partner and trusted advisor to the Chief Curator providing advice and counsel within assigned areas of responsibility. Assists Chief Curator in establishing goals and priorities in research and collecting related to his/her portfolio taking into account the needs and goals of the Museum

Curatorial portfolio. Conducts research, publication, exhibition, interpretation, and development of the collection of apparel, jewelry, and accessories.

Exhibitions. Curates, plans and manages temporary exhibitions that reflect the Museum’s mission. At times, these may be outside the assistant/associate curator’s primary area of expertise, and may be a traveling exhibition shaped for Hillwood by the curator.

Recurring Tasks:

  • Oversees installation and interpretation of areas of the Mansion primarily devoted to of apparel, jewelry, and accessories.
  • Organizes special exhibitions; works with other curators and staff to plan temporary and permanent gallery installations;
  • Conducts scholarly research on the collection of  apparel, jewelry and accessories;
  • Maintains curatorial records in assigned areas;
  • Publishes the collection in scholarly and popular formats, including museum publications, on a regular basis;
  • Updates collections records within his/her portfolio prepares information for the web site, brochures, labels, and other media;
  • Cultivates collectors and potential donors;
  • Recommends acquisitions to the Chief Curator and prepares acquisition proposals;
  • Collaborates with members of the Interpretation Division in creating programs to reach a wide range of audiences;
  • Lectures to public, docents, and volunteers to increase appreciation and understanding of the apparel, jewelry and accessories collection
  • Provides information to Marketing & Communications on assigned areas and represents Hillwood in interviews and presentations to the press as requested;
  • Responds to requests from members of the public for information on the assigned areas;
  • Participates in selection of books and other library resources;
  • Performs other tasks as required by supervisor.

Organizational Relationships:

  • Reports to  Chief Curator
  • Significant interaction and influencing responsibility at all levels of the organization.

Requirements:

Knowledge and Experience

  • M.A. in a relevant discipline (Ph.D. preferred);
  • Academic knowledge of 20th century women’s clothing; expertise in clothing and costume history
  • Additional areas of knowledge could include: the history of the decorative arts; jewelry and accessories history; and experience with contemporary installations;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multiple media and object types;
  • A record of innovative scholarly research and publications;
  • Experience working directly in an arts organization as a curatorial lead with demonstrated responsibility for the exhibits, care, and handling of artwork and historic objects.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent ability to communicate ideas effectively in spoken and written forms to both specialized and popular audiences, including short and long formats;
  • Ability to adjust writing considering institutional guidelines, editorial feedback, and copy editing
  • Thorough knowledge of current museum standards and practices;
  • Must be highly organized, resourceful, and dedicated as well as able to manage multiple projects and work in a dynamic team-oriented environment;
  • Act and think both strategically and tactically.
  • Has a highly developed level of emotional intelligence and the ability to work influentially and collaboratively with peers and other stakeholders, including facilitating group projects, committees, and implementing ideas generated from others
  • Is regarded as credible and trustworthy with a track record of working as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.
  • Possesses superior interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

  • Regularly communicates in English both verbally and in writing at a professional level.  
  • Must demonstrate strong computer skills, including: Microsoft Office, Piction, and Re-discovery or databases
