Helpful Tips
Allow plenty of time
Hillwood guests average close to three hours visiting. Arrive early so you may have ample time to enjoy everything Hillwood has to offer.

Visit Tuesday through Friday
Weekends tend to be busier than weekdays.

Dress for comfort
Wear comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing for the seasons so you may enjoy all the breathtaking outdoor spaces.

Summer and Winter are beautiful at Hillwood
While Spring and Fall seasons are the most popular, the gardens have much to offer during the Winter and Summer.

Bicyclists are welcome
Hillwood welcomes bicyclists and a bicycle rack is available outside the Visitor Center.


Tour options
We recommend that you begin your visit with the Orientation film in the Visitor Center, the perfect introduction to Hillwood (the film is 15 minutes long and it runs every 30 minutes from 10:00am to 4:30pm). All Tour Options are complimentary.

Printed Tours provide an overview of the Mansion and gardens and are recommended for visitors limited by time. Printed tours are available in English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Acoustiguide Audio Tours: This random-access tour includes a narrated 90-minute Mansion tour and 60 minute garden tour. A children's audio tour, Stories of Hillwood's Russian Treasures, is available. Kings, Queens, and Soup Tureens, emphasizing the French collection, and Treasures & Traditions, highlighting the Russian collection, are additional audio tours also available.

Guided Mansion Tours are offered daily at 11:30am and 1:30pm and on select Sundays at 1:30pm. Guided Garden Tours are offered in the spring and fall at 10:30am and 12:30pm. Tickets are available at the Visitor Center on a first-come, first-served basis.

During your Visit
Coatroom
While visiting the Mansion, please check coats, cameras, backpacks, and shopping bags at the complimentary coatroom located in the Entry Hall. Umbrellas and strollers may be left outside the Mansion entrance.

Lost and Found
If you lose an item or mistakenly receive or take an item not belonging to you, please call 202.243.3929 for assistance.

Resource Area
The Resource Area in the Mansion allows visitors to explore the collections, estate, and life of Marjorie Merriweather Post through books, videos, and a computer.

Art Research Library
The Art Research Library, accessible by appointment only, is a non-circulating library dedicated to the decorative arts of Russia and Europe. Visit the Library page for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Visitor Guidelines
To preserve Hillwood’s collections and gardens, and to ensure that everyone has a pleasant visit, we ask that you remember the following:

  • All ages are welcome in the Mansion & Gardens.
  • Turn wireless devices off or set them to vibrate while touring the estate.
  • Please consume food and drink at the Café and designated picnicking areas.
  • Photography and videotaping for private, non-commercial use are allowed outdoors and in the greenhouse only. Any photography or filming for purposes other than personal use requires written permission from the museum. Wedding photography is not permitted.
  • Smoking is permitted near trash receptacles fitted with ashtrays.
  • While visiting the Mansion, please check coats, cameras, backpacks, and shopping bags at the complimentary coatroom located in the Entry Hall. Umbrellas and strollers may be left outside the Mansion entrance.
  • Enjoy the art with your eyes and mind, but please do not touch.
  • Watch your step in the gardens, as some of the natural stone is uneven. Please stay on the designated paths and do not pick or gather flowers or plants.
  • No pets (except service animals) are permitted on the grounds.
