Experience the festive mood of the season with lively kolyadki (carols) and winter songs from Russia and Ukraine, featuring the sounds of the balalaika, accordion, domra, and guitar. After the performance, ensemble members will be available to talk about the music and their traditional Russian instruments. Performed by Michael Nazaretz, Yelena Rector, Ilhan Izmirli, Rick Netherton, Anya Titova and Olga Rines, of Samovar Folk Music Ensemble.

Old Russia comes alive with traditional Russian folk dances performed by the Baltimore-based ensemble, Kalinka. The ensemble’s director, Dr. Katya Denisova, is joined by dancers Liza kalashnikova-Luby, Alexandr Vasadze, and Vladimir Koloskov. Lively music, performed by Svetlana Nikonova, Vladimir Zakharevich, and Andrey Saveliev of the St. Petersburg Trio, accompanies the dancing.

Come see Grandfather Frost (Russia’s Santa Claus) and his granddaughter, the Snow Maiden! They tell folktales and explain old Russian holiday traditions. Meet them as they wander the Estate between performances. Performed by Scott Sedar and Susan Wheeler. Written by Nick Olcott. Directed by Michael Russotto.

Dress in the style of the boyars, or nobles, from old Russia, with your very own kokoshnik (lady’s headdress) or gentleman’s hat. Gain inspiration for decorating your Russian headwear from the costumes of Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden, as well as the boyar costume and kokoshnik on display in the Mansion’s Pavilion. The clothin worn by the characters in the paining, A Boyar Wedding Feast, also found in the Pavilion, may provide inspiration for your costume, as well.

A Quest for Fabulous
Dacha and Mansion
View Hillwood’s special exhibition, A Quest for Fabulous: Thirty Years of Collecting, 1977-2007, before it closes on December 30. In celebration of its thirtieth anniversary as a public museum, Hillwood displays 46 decorative art objects – some never before displayed – that have enriched the collection during the past three decades. The exhibition begins in the Dacha and spills into the Mansion; look for the A Quest for Fabulous logo.
Tour the Mansion
Explore the splendors of the Mansion, decorated for the holiday season, and view the collections using the audio or printed tour as your guide. Stop by the Visitor Center tour desk to pick up headphones and an audio unit (free). Inquire about the specialty audio tour Treasures and Traditions: The Luxury Arts of Imperial Russia. Printed tours are available in English, Russian, French, and Spanish. Volunteers are on station to answer questions.
Tour the Gardens and Greenhouse
Enjoy a leisurely stroll in the gardens using an audio or printed tour as your guide. Don’t forget to stop in the Greenhouse to see the orchid collection.
Museum Shop
The Museum Shop is stocked for the holiday season. Drop by to purchase holiday gifts, including books, jewelry, and CDs. Browse the beautiful selection of Fabergé-style egg ornaments to decorate your tree at home. Don’t forget to stop by the children’s section!
Café

The Café, which offers a variety of French and Russian inspired dishes, is open for lunch and Royal tea and features a children’s menu. Please stop by the Café to reserve your “Royal” seating.
