RUSSIAN WINTER FESTIVAL, DECEMBER 15 AND 16, 2007
AT HILLWOOD ESTATE, MUSEUM AND GARDENS

Washington, D.C. - Russian Winter Festival at Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens celebrates Russian holiday traditions with a family-friendly event.

Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden, the Russian Santa Claus and his granddaughter, will visit Hillwood and share Russian folk tales. Children of all ages can make either a lady's kokoshnik (headdress) or gentleman's hat like those worn by Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden. A family audio guide will be available, highlighting Hillwood's Russian collection, including Imperial porcelain and works by Fabergé. Russian objects are also featured in the special exhibition A Quest for Fabulous: Thirty Years of Collecting, 1977-2007, which closes on December 30.

Samovar Russian Folk Music Ensemble will perform winter-themed music throughout the day. After each performance, ensemble members will be available to talk about the music and their traditional Russian instruments, such as a prima domra and a contrabass balalaika.

Kalinka, a Baltimore-based traditional Russian dance ensemble, will perform folk dances from the different regions of Russia. Kalinka will also offer mini-workshops throughout the day where visitors will be taught a traditional Russian dance. The ensemble's performances will be accompanied by the St. Petersburg Trio.

The estate will be decorated for the holidays with garlands and floral arrangements from Hillwood's own greenhouses. Throughout the Mansion, topiaries of poinsettia, herbs, and fruit create a festive atmosphere celebrating the season in the spirit of Hillwood's founder, Marjorie Merriweather Post. In addition, table settings in the Mansion dining and breakfast rooms are changed to reflect the holidays.

Throughout the holiday season, Hillwood's Museum Shop features a variety of decorations and unique gifts including Matreshka (nesting doll) ornaments, Russian-style fur hats and handbags.

Visitors can also enjoy Royal Tea at Hillwood's Café. Royal Tea includes savories and sweets served with sherry, wine or champagne. A la carte tea, coffee and hot chocolate are also available throughout the day.
