Media Advisory WHAT: Hillwood welcomes the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community for a special day of activities. The sixth annual Gay Day at Hillwood celebrates the fabulous lifestyle of Marjorie Merriweather Post.
New this year, DC Lambda Squares revives one of Mrs. Post’s favorite party traditions: square dancing. Dressed in period clothes from the 1950s, they will perform and teach square dances. One of Mrs. Post’s square dance outfits, on display just for Gay Day, will be featured in gallery talks by Howard Kurtz, assistant curator of costumes and textiles.
Photographs from Mrs. Post’s elaborate parties, as well as selections from her butler’s notebooks, will be on display, offering a glimpse of memorable menus and guest lists studded with an array of Washington notables. The special exhibition A Quest for Fabulous: Thirty Years of Collecting, 1977-2007 will be on view in the Dacha and Mansion.
Visitors can see private rooms not normally open to the public, including the Ladies’ Powder Room, the Massage Room, the Snooze Room, and the English Bedroom. These rooms offer an exclusive peek into the comforts that Mrs. Post and her guests enjoyed.
Antique vehicles from the time of Marjorie Merriweather Post will be on display in the Motor Court courtesy of the Straight Eights Chapter of the Lambda Car Club. Gay Day visitors will be able to practice their golf skills on the putting green and enjoy talks by Hillwood gardeners.
A drop-in family activity lets children create their own glittering gold box, inspired by Mrs. Post’s fabulous collection. Mrs. Post had a life-long passion for collecting intricately decorated gold boxes made by Fabergé, Cartier, and others.
Wrap up the day with Punch on the Portico, a festive gathering in the tradition of Mrs. Post’s legendary garden parties. Meet Gay Day speakers and performers while enjoying some of Mrs. Post’s favorite foods and mingling on the lovely Lunar Lawn.
