MEDIA ADVISORY WHAT: In honor of Veterans Day, Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens invites veterans, military personnel, and their families to enjoy a relaxing day exploring the Mansion and gardens, reestablishing a tradition of museum founder Marjorie Merriweather Post. Mrs. Post used her influence and resources as an heiress, businesswoman, and society hostess to provide wartime support of American military personnel. During World War I, Mrs. Post was active with the Red Cross, rolling bandages and hosting fundraising luncheons. She also personally financed a Red Cross hospital in France; for her efforts, she received the Cross of a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. In World War II, Mrs. Post loaned her yacht, the Sea Cloud, to the Coast Guard where it was refitted as a cutter and used as a weather ship. She also organized fundraisers for Belgian and Russian relief efforts; served as a director of the National War Fund; hosted teas for the American Red Cross; and worked for Army-Navy Relief. Mrs. Post’s support of veterans and military personnel was not limited to financial contributions. During World War II, Mrs. Post invited WAVE patients from Bethesda Naval Hospital to her home for a luncheon and tour of her Russian collections. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mrs. Post hosted Vietnam veterans at Hillwood, including wounded Marines and Navy corpsmen from Bethesda Naval Hospital and patients from Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Veterans visited Hillwood for afternoon tea on the Lunar Lawn, entertainment, and to experience the tranquility of the gardens. The 2007 Veterans Day program features gallery talks highlighting Hillwood’s military collections, including historic medals, orders, and imperial regalia, as well as Russian porcelains and glassworks decorated with military themes and orders. Throughout the day, families and children of all ages will be able to participate in a hands-on art activity making their own Russian-style military badges, symbolizing bravery, loyalty, and other accomplishments. A garden tour showcases Hillwood’s eight formal gardens and the autumn-blooming plants.
