Collectors Circle

Help keep Hillwood’s collection a living one.

Photo of Bolin Box

With the support of the Collectors Circle, Hillwood purchased this immaculate jeweled silver and enamel box from the House of Bolin, one of the most important jewelers to work for the last Russian imperial court in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The box is an outstanding example of the art nouveau style embraced by the Bolin firm in the last years of its existence in Russia. Its lid of sinuous finely-chased peacock feathers set with small rose-cut diamonds and pearls against deep blue enamel illustrates the movement, known in Russia as stil moderne, whose rich, decorative ornament gained important attention in early 20th-century design. Until this purchase, this style was underrepresented in Hillwood’s collection.
