Annual Cleaning 2015
Hillwood is closed from January 12 through February 2.
Every January, Hillwood is closed for several weeks while our conservation team does the work necessary for maintaining the pristine standards set for the mansion and collections.
In January 1965, Marjorie Merriweather Post made a few notes on how her properties were run: “The operation of my household is the result of careful planning over the many years. In addition, I am blessed with a remarkably god staff who believe in working together as a team. Each individual has their own appointed job for which they are responsible and they take pride in seeing that it is well done. In operation, every detail is worked out in advance to ensure smooth running. There are too many things which can come up unexpectedly to run the risk of not arranging beforehand everything that can be foreseen.”
Though it is difficult to foresee that Marjorie meant this document to serve as instruction for the operations of a museum in 2015, for three weeks this January, this very aspect of Post's perfectly coordinated maintenance of Hillwood comes to life as the conversation team carries out finely detailed work to ensure the the mansion and the treasured objects it houses are maintained to the highest standards.
While Hillwood is closed to the public, rugs and draperies are cleaned, floors are polished, chandeliers are dusted, and every surface of the mansion gets the white glove treatment.
Hillwood will re-open on February 3, 2015
Join us in 2015 for a host of programs, events, and special exhibitions that offer something new for every season at Hillwood.
