Learn about the intriguing history and endless creativity of this 250-year old, preeminent French porcelain factory in this four-part series. Join Liana Paredes, curator of Hillwood's special exhibition Sèvres Then & Now: Tradition and Innovation in Porcelain 1750–2000, and other fascinating speakers for an in-depth examination of Sèvres porcelain. This series offers the depth and breadth of a college class but without the exams!
• March 3–Sèvres Then & Now. This first session provides an overview of the Sèvres factory's rich and captivating history.
• March 10–Genuine or Fake? Identifying 18th-Century Sèvres. Curator Liana Paredes exposes the human stories behind these sumptuous porcelains. Then, under the guidance of Paredes's trained eye, look closely at Sèvres pieces from the 1700s to discern the difference between the genuine and the fake.
• March 17–19th Century: From the Heyday of Patronage to the Autumn of the Third Republic, 1800–1914. Paris-based art dealer and porcelain expert Martin Bonham-Carter unveils the wide and colorful range of styles during this period. Then, Bonham-Carter and curator Liana Paredes further discuss the changing identifying marks of 19th-century Sèvres.
• March 24–Sèvres Now & Beyond: Modern and Contemporary Ceramic Creations. Curator Liana Paredes introduces the little known yet fascinating Sèvres creations of the 20th and 21st centuries. Then Douglas Burton, owner of DC's cutting-edge home furnishings business Apartment Zero, highlights other 20th-century porcelains of note and discusses them in relation to contemporary Sèvres designs.
